The episode features an interview with Annette Kleiser, CEO of Dalan Animal Health, who has developed a vaccine for honeybees. The vaccine is administered to the queen bee through a sugar paste and is then passed on to her offspring, providing protection against diseases. The honeybee population plays a crucial role in pollination and food security, so the development of this vaccine is seen as a significant breakthrough. The CEO discusses the challenges of starting a new business in a niche market, gaining regulatory approval, and addressing the global need for bee health. The interview also touches on the importance of insects in ecosystems, the impact of diseases on bee colonies, and the potential for expanding this vaccination approach to other insect species.

What is the delivery mechanism for the vaccine?

  • The vaccine is mixed with a sugar paste called clean candy.
  • Beekeepers feed the vaccine-laced sugar paste to the queen bee, who then passes it on to her offspring.
  • The liquid vaccine is taken up by the queen and passed onto her ovaries and developing eggs.

Why are honeybees important for food security?

  • One-third of the world’s food depends on pollinators.
  • Honeybees are the primary pollinators used in agriculture to boost crop yields.
  • Losing honeybees would have a significant impact on nutrient-rich foods, biodiversity, and climate concerns.

How did the CEO get involved in developing a honeybee vaccine?

  • The CEO met a researcher at the University of Helsinki who had the idea for a honeybee vaccine.
  • Recognizing the importance of bees and the lack of solutions to address their decline, the CEO decided to form a company and make the vaccine a reality.
  • The development of the vaccine began four and a half years ago.

What are the challenges in the beekeeping industry?

  • Bee colonies face a multitude of stressors, including diseases, climate change, pesticides, and transportation.
  • The lack of modern tools for disease protection puts bee colonies at risk.
  • The goal of the vaccine is to make bees healthier and better equipped to handle these stressors.

How do clinical trials for the vaccine work?

  • Clinical trials involve exposing the larvae to the disease to test if they become sick.
  • High doses of the pathogen are used to observe the survival rates of vaccinated larvae.
  • The initial responses from thousands of beekeepers who tried the vaccine have been positive, with no reported cases of disease.

What are the challenges in scaling the honeybee vaccine business?

  • The company is facing a high demand for the vaccine but has limited resources to respond to inquiries and manufacturing requests.

Lao Tzu once said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” My recent trek up Mt. Kenya with Sir Richard Branson and a fantastic group of inspiring individuals embodied this quote; it was an incredible journey of a lifetime.

We embarked on our adventure in October 2022. Today, six months later, I am thrilled to share the full-length video of our journey from Day 1 to Day 5 on Mt. Kenya. Our adventure took us to the top of the second highest mountain in Africa as part of the Strive Challenge. The Strive Challenge is a campaign by Big Change, a mission-based organisation dedicated to ensuring youth success.

During the trip, we faced challenges, pushed our limits, and formed lifelong bonds. This expedition was not just about climbing a mountain; it was about embracing the spirit of adventure, reaching new heights, and working towards a brighter future for all.

Throughout our trek, we broke into groups and discussed global education challenges and how we might support development worldwide. My group’s conversation focused on our personal experiences and how they connected to the issues that Big Change is tackling.

Education has played a crucial role in my family’s history. My Grandfather left Hong Kong in the 1950s to seek a better life in the United Kingdom. His ability to create a successful business hinged on his grasp of English and his early, albeit limited, formal education.

My own journey through education was shaped by the fact that I grew up as a first-generation immigrant in Belfast, where I experienced racially-charged bullying. This experience changed my outlook on the school system and formal education. Despite this, I studied law at one of England’s most prestigious law schools and recently attended Harvard Business School.

Throughout my education, I have developed a holistic view and come to believe that while education is important, it doesn’t guarantee everything in life. Like anything of value, it must be cultivated and nurtured over the long term.

I am a massive fan of Big Change and its work. The organisation does a great job bringing together like-minded people to effect change. While Big Change used to focus on the UK, it now has a global reach.

For those interested in getting involved and participating in the global conversation, you can host a #BigEducationConversation. By doing this, you can help share a vision for change. Visit and join the mission to support a million conversations in communities worldwide.

As for me, I am excited to continue pushing boundaries and breaking barriers. I believe that #anythingispossible when we work together towards a common goal.

MikoBits interviews Evin McMullen from DISCO about decentralized identity and its role in the metaverse. DISCO aims to eliminate the need for filling out forms by allowing individuals to control and share their own identity and data. The platform enables users to carry their information in a “data backpack” using their blockchain keys. This allows for the seamless transfer of data between different apps and platforms, increasing personalization and reducing the risks associated with traditional identity systems. By integrating decentralized identity into the metaverse, individuals can enjoy personalized experiences and enhance their interactions within digital and physical environments.

What problem does DISCO solve?

  • DISCO allows users to avoid filling out forms and repeating information by creating a data backpack that carries their identity and data across different apps and platforms.
  • This eliminates the high switching costs associated with moving between different apps and increases data security and privacy.

How does decentralized identity work?

  • DISCO enables users to use their blockchain keys to control and share pieces of information written about them in the form of credentials.
  • These credentials, similar to plastic ID cards, allow users to express specific aspects of their identity and preferences in a portable and secure manner.
  • The use of blockchain keys adds a new superpower to the keys, allowing users to write, send, receive, and use information about themselves securely.

The role of identity in the metaverse

  • The metaverse, according to DISCO, is the ability to show up in any digital or physical environment and experience personalization based on the shared aspects of one’s identity.
  • Identity is the key to unlocking a metaverse that is not interrupted by sign-up forms and offers personalized experiences and opportunities tailored to individuals.
  • By providing more than just financial information on-chain, individuals can enjoy unique and authentic human connections and personalized content within the metaverse.

The value of DISCO in the current landscape

  • DISCO has gained over 12,000 users through its public data beta, with support for over 130,000 credentials.
  • The most popular application within DISCO is the “GM” credential, which allows users to send and receive “good morning” greetings.
  • DISCO’s focus on user preferences and personalization has resonated with users who enjoy the ability to express different facets of their identity in a low-stress and fun way.

The challenge of transferability in decentralized identity

  • Transferability of credentials can pose risks, as it enables the sale of an individual’s entire identity.
  • DISCO aims to mitigate this risk by focusing on the entanglement of multiple identifiers and data points, making it less likely for users to sell or give up their full set of credentials.
  • The goal is to create a concentration of risk within the interconnectedness of different addresses, rather than relying solely on a single key or credential.

Navigating the future of identity in a changing landscape

  • The future of identity lies in the balance between protocol-centric design and human-centered design.
  • Protocols need to consider the limitations and behaviors of human actions to ensure the development of user-centric products and solutions.
  • DISCO aims to prioritize user needs and experiences above all else, providing a platform that bridges the gap between rational protocol systems and the complexities of human behavior.
